Chief Financial Officer

We're looking for a collaborative teammate to join our mission-driven team investing in equitable arts and culture organizations and nonprofit leaders to create a thriving and just Denver. The CFO will help steward the Foundation's financial resources, support our mission-aligned investment strategy, strengthen operations, and partner across the Foundation to advance the mission & values of Bonfils-Stanton Foundation. This is a unique opportunity for meaningful work beyond traditional finance.

Job Summary

As a member of a small, collaborative team, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for all financial management, investments, accounting, reporting, compliance, and risk management. Reporting to the President & CEO, the CFO is the Foundation's principal steward of financial resources and partners with the Board of Trustees to fulfill the Foundation's fiduciary responsibilities, ensuring all assets are managed with integrity, transparency, and a long-term perspective that advances both financial sustainability and the Foundation's mission and values.

The CFO will work closely with the Investment Committee and external advisors to oversee the Foundation's endowment and advance our commitment to values and mission-aligned investing, achieving strong relative risk-adjusted returns while ensuring alignment with the Foundation's mission, vision, and values.

Responsibilities

Financial Management

Provide strategic leadership for all financial functions of the Foundation, including:

  • Financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and cash management
  • Accounting operations and financial reporting
  • Prepare financial and investment materials for board meetings
  • Tax compliance, including private foundation reporting requirements
  • Design and assessment of financial strategy and performance, managing the annual budget and long-term goals in support of the Foundation's mission and objectives
  • Audit coordination and oversight
  • Internal controls and financial policies
  • Partner with the CEO and Board to provide thoughtful analysis and recommendations that support informed decision-making
  • Support program officers in the development of new programs and review of existing grants and programs, and technical assistance to grantee organizations when requested

Impact and Mission-Aligned Investing

Primary staff support for the Foundation's values and mission-aligned investing:

  • Support to the Investment Committee and Board of Trustees
  • Coordinate relationships with investment advisors and mission-aligned investments, and identifying and screening potential investments
  • Monitore portfolio performance, liquidity, and capital commitments
  • Support implementation and ongoing monitoring of the Foundation's mission-aligned investment strategy
  • Assist in the development and review of policies and practices
  • Ensure timely and accurate investment reporting and analysis

Risk Management

Partner with the CEO and Board to identify emerging risks and ensure the Foundation's financial infrastructure supports operational efficiency and effectiveness and promotes compliance with laws and regulations:

  • Ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations governing private foundations
  • Collaborate with legal counsel, Board, and CEO to address compliance issues
  • Ensure appropriate insurance coverage
  • Vendor and contract administration
  • Ensure corporate records and minutes are accurate and in compliance with relevant statutes and regulations
  • Upholde ethical standards in all financial decisions and activities

Operations and Administration

  • General support of Foundation operations and administration
  • Support the CEO in the development of employee policies and compliance with appropriate laws
  • Compensation and benefits benchmarking
  • Manage the relationship with the PEO and benefit providers and manage annual contracting
  • Special projects as needed

Qualities We Are Looking For

A successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • Financial acumen and an ability to explain financial issues and concepts and collaborate with grantees and programmatic colleagues who do not have finance backgrounds
  • Strategic and systems thinking
  • Strong written, verbal, and analytical skills to support and enable sound and strategic decision-making
  • Ability to work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders
  • Integrity, accountability, and discretion with confidential information
  • Commitment to learning and collaboration
  • Alignment with the Foundation's values and commitment to equity

Qualifications

Strong candidates will bring many of the following qualifications and experiences:

  • Minimum of a B.A. in accounting, finance, or a related field, or equivalent experience; MBA, CPA, or other relevant certification a plus
  • Ability to exercise discretion with sensitive information
  • Ability to set priorities and manage multiple assignments and deadlines
  • Technology savvy, with proficiency in current and emerging technology including Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, Teams, PowerPoint, SharePoint), QuickBooks and/or other accounting systems, Bill.com or other payment systems, and other programs and system integrations
  • Working knowledge of nonprofit and private foundation accounting rules and regulations
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusiveness

Compensation and Benefits

Bonfils-Stanton offers competitive compensation and benefits, including a 401k plan with a Foundation contribution, generous paid time off, a robust benefits plan, professional development opportunities, and a paid sabbatical after seven years of service. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Salary Range: $150,000 – $200,000 FTE

We are open to discussion regarding whether the position is full-time or .8 FTE
